Our founder Raya Frem

grew up in Lebanon – a melting pot of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean culture and creativity. Growing up between these regions, Raya was influenced by the regional traditions of treating one’s hair with the same care and attention as the skin.

The name ‘AmaRaya’ derives from Raya’s own name, together with the Lebanese word ‘Qamariye’ which translates as ‘a night under the full moon’ – an image that Raya has always found to be inspiring and soothing.

The rituals that Raya grew up with focused on applying oils and overnight treatments to the scalp and hair as part of a regular routine.

“Women in my culture often rely on traditions and use a lot of home remedies – which are often passed down from previous generations. So I wanted to create a product range that celebrated that.”

From 2020, Raya spent four years of extensive scientific research to ensure her results-driven clinical formulas were up to the highest standard.

Raya also drew on her own personal wellness journey when developing AmaRaya, in particular her experience with the ancient wellness practice of Ayurveda.

“I fell in love with Ayurvedic methods of using organic oils to heal and calm by massaging the body and scalp with hot oil – normally a mixture of organic beneficial oils with healing benefits.”

  • Conscious about the environment and animal rights, Raya wanted to ensure AmaRaya prioritised sustainable ingredients, devoid of silicones, harsh chemicals, artificial colour or fragrance, as well as being completely vegan with zero animal testing.

  • Philanthropy is another key element of the brand. As a female founder, Raya is aware of the importance of supporting and empowering women, which she hopes to implement through donating a percentage of AmaRaya’s profits to such organisations. Being a mother herself, she fully appreciates how education is a pillar of society and wishes for her charitable endeavours to reflect this.
